FAQ

1. At what age should I see an orthodontist?

Dr. Smith and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend the first visit at 7 years of age. Although treatment might not begin at this age, important growth information can be obtained. Jaw growth problems are sometimes easier to correct at an early age, possibly avoiding jaw surgery later. It's also never too late for treatment. At Smith Orthodontics, we have patients in treatment from 7 to 70.

2. Will braces hurt?

Some patients experience discomfort for the first few days after the initial placement of braces or adjustments. Ibuprofen is helpful in making you more comfortable.

3. I'm in the band at school. Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

No. We have patients playing everything from trumpets and saxophones to flutes. Many find after the bite and alignment of teeth improves that it's actually easier than before to play their musical instruments.

4. My son plays football and wrestles. My daughter plays volleyball and basketball. Will they still be able to play sports?

Yes. You may have noticed many professional athletes also wear braces. A mouth guard is recommended when heavy physical contact is expected. Let us know if you are in an active sport and will be happy to provide a mouth guard for you. "Boil and Bite" mouth guards are not recommended, as they will prevent orthodontic movement.
